What is bone-conduction headphones?
It is a type of specialized wireless headphones that rest directly on the listeners’ cheekbones. Unlike traditional headphones that seal around the whole ear canal, they are small in size and only rest on top of the cheekbones
Why is it important?
Sounds are often conducted through the air. Traditionally, sound sources will travel from outer ear, down to the middle ear and to the eardrum that vibrates to be passed on to the cochlea where it will be processed and sent to our brain. However, in this bond-conduction system, sound doesn’t depend on air but the bones. Sound wave is conducted on a much shorter path from the outer ear bones directly into the inner ear.
The activity will help students to identify the structures of the ear and understand the differences between the procedure in which a sound wave travels through the ear via air and bone.
