What is edible cutlery?

Edible cutlery is an alternative utensil to using plastic or wooden spoons. Plastic or wooden spoons, forks, and straws that are used only once and thrown away cause damage to the environment. An alternative to using such plastic utensils is to use edible cutlery. After eating a meal, the spoon can be eaten as well. Even if the spoons are not consumed, they can be thrown away with other biodegradable food waste. The spoons also come in several flavors.

Why are they important?

To minimize the environmental harms the plastic bottles are causing, edible cutlery poses a new way out of the dangers. Edible cutlery has a long shelf-life of up to 1 year and can be naturally decomposed in 3 to 7 days if not eaten after usage during a meal. Environmental sustainability is one of the major factors for choosing edible cutlery to finish a meal.


Activity Overview

Students are expected to write a lab report about the decomposition of plastics and biodegradable products.

The whole experiments will take approximately 2 weeks. Students will be able to design an experiment that requires both observations and data analysis.
