What is Stem cell therapy?
Stem cell therapy uses stem cells to treat a particular disease or symptom. The main focus of this therapy is to repair a diseased and injured tissue with stem cells. In place of donated organs, which are limited in numbers, stem cells can provide unlimited tissues or organs to be transplanted.
Why is it important?
With the shortage of organs for transplant around the world, stem cells are promising sources for regenerative organs. Induced pluripotent cells also reduce the risk of rejection in patients since the stem cells are derived from the patients themselves. However, more studies on stem cells have to be conducted to confirm stem cell therapy’s potential.
Activity Overview
Students will play "Cell families card game". It introduces students to the concepts of multipotency in tissue stem cells, and pluripotency in embryonic stem cells.
Duration: 30mins
Materials: stem cell cards
